Cost of Living Crisis: 5 tips to save money

Alfie Smith

Times are hard, which makes saving money here and there more important than ever. That's why we have compiled a list of the best ways to save during the current economic crisis.

1) Shop on a budget

This might sound obvious, but you would be surprised by how many people either ignore or forget this one. By spending your money at more budget-friendly supermarkets, like Aldi or Lidl, you can really put a dent in your monthly costs. Even if you still swear by branded products like HEINZ, it still pays to save on things where you can opt for the home brand instead.

2) Complete surveys

Extra hours are somewhat of a luxury at the moment amongst employees – but that doesn’t stop you from making passive income along side your salary. For example, you can take surveys online which often reward you with gift cards redeemable on amazon, however some survey companies like YLive offer cash checks. I know this because I also have used surveys during financial hardship, and while they are tedious, they are also reliable. Don’t expect to make significant gains this way alone, but if done alongside the other tips on this list, it will definitely help.

3) Save on heating

Keep the heating off for as long as possible. It’s winter and It’s cold, but there are alternatives to standard heating. First and foremost, make sure you insulate your living space. Make use of door snakes and use hot water bottles (preferably when you are heating the kettle for a brew anyway). Wear fluffy pyjamas or even onesies. They may look silly, but they will certainly keep you warm.

4) Get a smart meter

Get a smart meter. Make sure you are turning plug sockets off when not in use, same for the lights. When possible. Laziness can cost so it’s important to know how much you could be spending on unnecessary energy use.

5) Use coupons

Finally, you can use discount coupons available online like Honey - a free chrome extension which automatically applies coupons and deals when shopping online. A lot of the time it might not work correctly, but when it does the saving is significant. Most importantly though, it’s free to use so there’s really no downside to having it.

We hope that these tips will help people get through these difficult times.
