Cost of living crisis: 7 ways to stay warm this winter

Codie Davies

The winter days when you snuggle up in a warm blanket, the heating on full blast and the house feeling like you're sat in a 200 degree oven has never sounded better. Oh boy do we feel like we took advantage of being able to put the heating on 24 hours a day now the cost of living crisis is creeping upon us day by day.

The question asks, "how are we going to keep warm by using less money?". Look no further, this article is where you will get your answers.

  1. Hot water bottles

One of the oldest tricks in the books, using a hot water bottle means the only electricity you'd be using is the kettle. These are perfect as they come in all shapes and sizes and heat you up instantly! Regina, an out-goer in Cheltenham, said, "I always use my hot water bottle this time of the year. I find it warms me up straight away and costs almost nothing."

2. Avoiding draught

Chimneys are the worst for draught in houses alongside gaps in doors. You can easily create DIY chimney sheep to stop the draught in chimneys. For doors, remember those long sausage dog-like material things our mums shoved at the bottom of the front door? Yes, well they're perfect for keeping draught from coming through doors.

Here's a video on making a DIY chimney sheep.

3. Fluffy socks and thick blankets

Everyone loves a pair of fluffy socks, whatever the weather! Fluffy socks are especially good as they keep the body temperature regulated and warm. So you won't get too hot in your socks, wear them when and where you want. Thick blankets and spare duvets are also helpful in keeping warm during the colder months.

4. Drinking warm beverages

Typically, a warm beverage does actually keep you warm compared to cold drinks which would cool you down more. Though, studies do show that warm beverages are seen to make you sweat more in warm weather and cool you down. Pop the kettle on for your beverage whilst you're filling up that hot water bottle, it wouldn't hurt!

5. Spend more time upstairs

As we all know, heat rises, and it's the same case in a house. Chill on the bed with a good book, watch TV if you have one upstairs. If not, bring it up from the living room!

6. Catching pets for warmth

Our life-long companions and friends are perfect when it comes to body heat. Catching with your pet under a thick, fluffy blanket in bed with your good old fluffy socks on...there is nothing that sounds more perfect than that! I'm sure they would love it just as much too.

7. Run a bubble bath

Running a bubble bath will cost you next to nothing and can keep you toasty for a couple of hours. Unless, you're one of those people who just top the bath up with more hot water when it begins to go cold!

A quarter of the British public say they will not be turning their heating on this year. Has this convinced you not to too?
